Against Scanning

We have trained ourselves to scan rather than read. The eye moves in F-patterns across the page, harvesting keywords, skipping sentences, constructing meaning from fragments.

This is efficient. It is also impoverished.

The Alternative

Deliberate reading — the kind practiced by scholars before the acceleration — begins with a different posture. Not extraction but reception. Not speed but depth.

The knowledge wiki is built for this kind of reading. The column width, the line height, the spacing between paragraphs — every typographic decision serves the practice of slow, deliberate engagement with text.
