The Telescope Problem

When Galileo pointed his telescope at Jupiter, he did not merely see more — he saw differently. The instrument changed the category of what was observable.

Every tool does this. A spreadsheet makes certain patterns visible and others invisible. A calendar makes time fungible. A to-do list makes tasks discrete.

Designing for Perception

If tools shape perception, then tool design is an act of epistemological commitment. The choices we make about what to surface, what to hide, and what to leave ambiguous determine what the user can know.

Stilled. instruments are designed with this responsibility in mind. They do not optimize for throughput. They optimize for the quality of what becomes visible.
